A  Brides Interview with Shawna

How long have you been doing this, and how did you become a designer?

I’ve been a floral designer for almost 15 years, the last 10 of which I have had my own company.  My formal design training was done at Humber College, and I have continued my education through numerous workshops, design seminars, and design shows.  My work has been featured in Canadian magazines, won international design awards, recognized and awarded for customer service, inducted into the Canadian Academy of Floral Art and has sat on the Board of Directors for the last 3 years, and have twice been a part of the select design team chosen to flower the JUNO Awards.  I have also invested in becoming certified by the Wedding Planning Institute of Canada to offer my clients the most comprehensive, knowledgeable service available.

We love your floral design and decor services  & portfolio.   Everything sounds fantastic…..what is it that sets you apart from other wedding & event design firms?

I believe what makes this company unique, along with all the experience listed above, is the pure desire to offer you, my client, the most perfect realization of your dream.  When you first hold your wedding bouquet, when you walk down the aisle, when you step into the reception, I want your breath to be taken away!  I want every detail you dreamed of, and we planned together, to melt seamlessly into place to create a day that will live in your memory.   I want you to look back and say, “It was so easy, and beautiful, and everything I hoped it would be.  I would change nothing!”

This all sounds wonderful, and expensive!  Are we going to be able to afford this? 

There is no denying that a fabulous wedding can be a large investment, and I do not take your investment lightly.  I appreciate very much how hard you work for your money, that you have a financial comfort zone when it comes to reality of how much this will cost.  And you have my assurance that I will never be careless or cavalier with your money.  The experience I bring ensures that you never pay more than you need to, that every item in your wedding design and décor is of quality, freshness and cleanliness, and that I will do everything within my ability to create the vision you have, at a fair and reasonable price.  Knowing that our team can overcome almost any deadline or challenge, I believe the peace mind this gives is well worth the investment on such an important day.

Who do you work best with?

This system works best with a client who wants quality, who can take the leap of faith and believe in my years of experience, ability, and integrity.  I work best with a client who would like to collaborate, grow the vision together, or, maybe even just bring the beginning of a vision and allow me to flesh that vision out.  My happiest clients are the ones who are able to let me sweat the small details, so they can be free to enjoy the whole experience.

Who is not going to benefit from your help with designing wedding flowers and décor?

The clients who don’t get the best value of my services are the ones who feel they need to dictate every aspect of the design or the ones who are too afraid to allow their taste or personality shine through.  And I will explain why.  My forte is floral and wedding design – that’s why I get hired.  When a client needs to impose all their preconceived ideas on the process, they limit their design to only what is familiar to them.  This process simply repeats any wedding that the client may have already attended or seen before, not allowing the creative essence to fully evolve and be reflective of their event. If they are averse to doing “too much”, they may sacrifice details that make their event memorable and personable.   Also, potential clients who don’t value the contribution that florals and décor can add will probably not work well with our system.

Will I lose control of my wedding if you are designing it?

Definitely not!  I am here to help you create the perfect day for you.  This is a collaborative effort. 

Will you work with my vendors I’ve already found or want to work with?

I am more than happy to work with any other vendors you already have in place.  In fact, my preference is to have open lines of communication between any vendors who may intersect with our work.  For example, we will contact your chosen venue to advise on any special requirements of your design elements, to arrange for appropriate delivery/set up/strike times.  My goal is to make your day as stress-free and beautiful as possible.

Do you take credit cards and do you have a payment plan?

Absolutely.  We accept VISA/MasterCard/Interact, as well as cheques.  A 25% non-refundable retainer is required once we decide to work together.  This retainer is your assurance of us being your designer, committed to your day.  If you would prefer to make payments through the process, we will do that.  Otherwise, the balance is due 2 weeks prior to your wedding day.

Do you have liability insurance?

My company carries $2 million in liability insurance for coverage at all venues.

Do you take more than one wedding a day?

Depending on the size and requirements of each event, I will determine on a per event basis, if more than one wedding can be flawlessly executed in one day.  If a confirmed wedding has all our resources committed, then I will stop accepting consultations/bookings for that day.
